Sixth Form Japan Day 2024 - Photos

On 5 November 2024, we held our highly anticipated annual Sixth Form Japan Day at Birkbeck, University of London, and it was a great success! Sixth Form students from across London joined us for a day full of opportunities to learn more about studying Japanese at university.

The day kicked off with a keynote speech by Dr Christopher Hood - Why Study Japan, followed by language workshops and taster lectures led by Cardiff University, Newcastle University, SOAS, University of East Anglia, and University of Warwick.

During the lunch break, the Sixth Formers eagerly participated in a wide range of cultural activities including shodo (calligraphy), origami, manga drawing with Chie Kutsuwada, a regional food game with Japan House London, Ritsumeikan University’s Japan Tech Lab, and more.

In the afternoon, University of Sheffield alumna Helen Whitehead shared her journey through Japanese Studies to the JET Programme and her current role at SMBC, followed by a panel with students from University of Cambridge and University of East Anglia. The Sixth Form students also had the opportunity to visit the University Fair, where they could learn more about the wide range of Japanese courses available at universities across the UK.

The day was a resounding success; an overwhelming number of attendees agreed that they were able to gain valuable insight on opportunities available to study Japanese and the kinds of careers they could pursue.

The Japan Society would like to thank everybody involved with making the day a great success, as well as a big thank you to all who came along to our event; we hope that you are feeling inspired and more motivated than ever to continue your Japanese studies!
