New Year’s Calligraphy Workshop 2025 - Photos

On Saturday 11 January 2025, three groups of eager participants joined us at The Japan Society to celebrate the Year of the Snake, in a series of kakizome workshops led by esteemed calligrapher, Yoko Takenami.
Kakizome, or "first writing," is a cherished New Year tradition in Japan. In this workshop, participants were introduced to the history of Japanese characters, exploring various calligraphy styles, and essential brush techniques. By the end of the session, each had written their own meaningful calligraphy piece—a positive word symbolising their aspirations for 2025. It was a wonderful, peaceful afternoon, leading to some excellent, creative pieces by all who attended!
