On Sunday 8 June, The Japan Society hosted an exclusive private tour for members and guests at Somerset House, offering a rare and intimate experience of Paper Clouds: Materiality in Empty Space, the Japan Pavilion at the 2025 London Design Biennale.

The installation, conceived as a poetic tribute to the Nelson Stair, captivated attendees with its ethereal use of Washi paper—celebrated for its translucency, texture, and quiet strength. Led by Toshiki Hirano, Co-Director at SEKISUI HOUSE – KUMA LAB (The University of Tokyo), and curated by Clare Farrow of Clare Farrow Studio, the tour provided insight into the creative and technical processes behind this cross-disciplinary work.

Participants also had the opportunity to hear from the violinist and composer Midori Komachi, who shared her experience performing in the installation’s centerpiece: a recyclable Washi paper dress designed by KUMA LAB. Her reflections on the interplay between movement, sound, and materiality brought the installation’s themes vividly to life.

The event highlighted the fusion of traditional Japanese craftsmanship with contemporary design, architecture, and performance. Structural engineer Yoshihiro Fukushima’s contributions to the installation’s form and stability were also acknowledged, underscoring the collaborative nature of the project.

Attendees praised the opportunity to engage directly with the creators, gaining a deeper appreciation for the cultural significance of Washi and its innovative applications. The tour concluded with a lively Q&A session, fostering thoughtful dialogue and reflection.

The Japan Society extends its sincere thanks to all speakers and participants for making this event a memorable celebration of Japanese artistry and innovation.
