Celebrating Shogi in London: Lecture on Mastery, Tournaments, and Beginners’ Workshop - Photos
From Friday 8 to Sunday 10 May 2026, The Japan Society co-hosted a series of shogi-related events, building on the success of the Discover the World of Shogi - Japanese Chess workshops in 2025. Held over three days, the events featured a talk, tournament, and beginner-friendly workshop.
On Friday 8 May, The Japan Society co-hosted Inside the World of Shogi: An Evening with Japanese Chess Masters at The Shard campus of Warwick Business School. Chaired by Sarah Parsons from East-West interface, the panel featured talks by certified shogi instructors Yasushi Ishikawa (Shidō Kishi 4-dan), Tetsuaki Sanada (Shidō Kishi 3-dan), and co-organiser Kohtaro Hirota. The talk featured insights into Shogi's history and the rigorous training required to pursue mastery.
On Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 May, we co-hosted the second Inter City Shogi Cup 2026, bringing the tournament to London for the first time following last year’s inaugural event in Frankfurt. The competition was open to all players who knew the basic rules of shogi, from beginners to those with casual or competitive experience. The tournament featured ELO-based group-stage matches, followed by handicap (komaochi) finals to ensure a balanced and enjoyable competition across all levels.
On Sunday, we also hosted a beginner-friendly workshop led by Yasushi Ishikawa and Tetsuaki Sanada. Attendees learnt the basics of shogi and competed in friendly matches.
All three events promoted shogi to a wider audience and strengthened the international shogi community through a shared love of the game. We owe a special note of thanks to Kohtaro Hirota, who was instrumental in making this project a reality, alongside our instructors, Yasushi Ishikawa and Tetsuaki Sanada. 2025年に開催したワークショップ「Discover the World of Shogi - Japanese Chess」の成功を踏まえ、日本協会は2026年5月8日（金）から10日（日）にかけて、講演会、大会、初心者向けワークショップを含む将棋関連のイベントシリーズを共同主催しました。
初日の5月8日（金）は、ウォーリック・ビジネススクールのシャード・キャンパスにて、石川泰氏（指導棋士四段）、真田哲明氏（指導棋士三段）、そして共同主催者である廣田氏による講演「Inside the World of Shogi: An Evening with Japanese Chess Masters」を開催。イースト・ウェスト・インターフェイスのサラ・パーソンズ氏が司会を務め、将棋の歴史やプロになるための厳しい訓練などが紹介されました。
5月9日（土）・10日（日）の2日間は、第二回「Inter City Shogi Cup 2026」を共催。昨年のフランクフルトでの第1回大会に続き、今回は初のロンドン開催となりました。本大会は、基本ルールを理解している初心者から競技経験者まで幅広く参加できる内容。ELOレーティングに基づくグループステージを経て、全員が公平に楽しめるよう駒落ち（ハンデ戦）による決勝戦が行われました。
また10日（日）には、石川氏と真田氏が指導する初心者向けワークショップも併せて開催。参加者は将棋の基本を学んだ後、フレンドリーマッチを通じて実際の対局を楽しみました。
一連のイベントは、将棋の魅力を広く紹介するとともに、多くの方が実際に将棋に触れる絶好の機会となりました。本イベントの実施に向けて尽力いただいた廣田氏をはじめ、講師の石川氏、真田氏、また、多大なるご協力をいただいたBrit-PIT Tax Consulting、日本将棋連盟、欧州将棋連盟（FESA）、そしてロンドン将棋クラブの皆様にも心より感謝いたします。
