Japanese Treasures at the Bodleian: A Private View - Photos
The Japan Society hosted an exclusive private tour of the Japanese collection at the Bodleian Libraries, followed by a guided visit to the historic Old Bodleian. The event offered members and guests a rare opportunity to engage directly with one of Europe’s oldest and most significant collections of Japanese rare books and manuscripts, spanning over 1,200 years from the Nara period to the twentieth century.
During a special show and tell session, attendees viewed a selection of remarkable items, including a document bearing the seal of Tokugawa Ieyasu, marking early diplomatic relations between England and Japan, as well as the oldest printed book in the collection, an early example of movable type printing, and a number of finely illustrated books and handscrolls. The session provided valuable insight into Japan’s literary and artistic heritage.
The visit concluded with a guided tour of the Old Bodleian, including the Divinity School and Duke Humfrey’s Library, offering participants a glimpse into the architectural and scholarly history of one of Oxford’s most iconic institutions. 特別展示・解説セッションでは、参加者は選りすぐりの貴重な資料を鑑賞しました。その中には、日英間の初期の外交関係を示す徳川家康の印章が押された文書、同コレクション最古の印刷本である活版印刷の初期の例、そして精巧な挿絵が施された書籍や絵巻物などが含まれていました。このセッションは、日本の文学および芸術的遺産に対する貴重な知見を提供するものでした。
