Join us online for the first Film Club of 2026 when we will discuss Naoko Ogigami's 2007 comedy-drama, Glasses.
Glasses (めがね; Megane, 2007) is written and directed by Naoko Ogigami and serves as a follow-up to her 2006 film Kamome Shokudo. Set on an unnamed island in Japan, the film tells the story of Taeko (Satomi Kobayashi), a stressed, antisocial city dweller in search of seclusion while vacationing on the island. As Taeko encounters the eccentric local inhabitants and their relaxed and unusual way of living, she gradually comes to find the joy in slowing down and letting go, finding inner peace along the way.
Naoko Ogigami (荻上 直子) is a film director, screenwriter, and cinematographer born in the Chiba Prefecture in 1972. She first began gaining attention after winning several prizes at the PIA Film Festival for her short film Hoshino-Kun, Yumeno-Kun (2001). Among her most notable works are her films Kamome Shokudo and Glasses. Her filmography is typified by their minimalistic quality and a common theme of questioning national identity. At the 2008 Berlin International Film Festival Glasses won the Manfred Salzgeber Award, for "broadening the boundaries of cinema today."
