Autumn holds a special place in Japanese culture, celebrated through poetry, art and seasonal traditions. In this workshop, The Japan Society welcomes Yoko Takenami to guide participants through the art of Japanese calligraphy, exploring autumn-inspired words and imagery while learning the techniques and aesthetics of this traditional art form.
Inspired by the colours, atmosphere and imagery of the season, this workshop will introduce participants to the art of Japanese calligraphy through the theme of autumn. Autumn has long been celebrated in Japanese culture, evoking images of changing leaves, harvest time, moon-viewing and the quiet beauty of the natural world.
In this workshop, participants will explore the expressive qualities of brush and ink while learning to write autumn-related words and characters in Japanese. Yoko will introduce different styles of Japanese writing and guide participants through the techniques used to create balanced and elegant compositions. Through careful attention to line, rhythm and spacing, participants will discover how calligraphy can capture the mood and feeling of the season.
No experience is necessary for this workshop. Whether you are new to calligraphy or looking to deepen your appreciation of Japanese culture, this is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the meditative practice of brushwork and create your own autumn-inspired calligraphy piece on a shikishi board to take home.
Yoko Takenami started her calligraphy studies at the age of seven. Educated in Japan and in Ohio, US, she qualified as a master of calligraphy in 1990. Yoko now lives in London and teaches calligraphy at various institutions such as British Library while also working as an interpreter. She regularly returns to Japan for inspiration for her calligraphy and tuition from her Teshinkai Master. Yoko is the author of The Simple Art of Japanese Calligraphy.

This workshop is suitable for participants aged 14 and over.- Participants aged 14–15 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian throughout the event. Due to limited space, places for under-16s accompanied by a non-participating parent or guardian are limited.
