To close the year, our Film Club turns to Tokyo-Ga (1985), Wim Wenders' contemplative documentary, reflecting on the legacy of Japanese filmmaker Yasujiro Ozu and the transformation of Japanese society.

Tokyo-Ga (1985) is Wim Wenders' reflective documentary tribute to the celebrated Japanese filmmaker Yasujiro Ozu. Travelling through Tokyo more than twenty years after Ozu's death, Wenders explores the changing face of Japan and searches for traces of the world depicted in Ozu's films. Along the way, he meets Ozu's longtime collaborators, while observing everyday life in the modern city. Blending personal travelogue, cultural observation and cinematic essay, Tokyo-ga offers a thoughtful meditation on memory, tradition, modernity and the power of film to capture the essence of ordinary life. Running through the documentary is Wenders' deep admiration for Ozu's humanistic vision and enduring influence on world cinema.

Wim Wenders (1945-) is a German filmmaker, photographer and author, widely regarded as one of the leading figures of New German Cinema. He is best known for acclaimed films such as Paris, Texas (1984), Wings of Desire (1987), Buena Vista Social Club (1999) and Perfect Days (2023). His work often explores themes of travel, memory, identity and human connection, combining striking visual storytelling with a deep curiosity about people and places around the world.

Do you love Japanese film classics, anime or contemporary cinema stories? Do you miss Japan and want to see it at least on screen? Would you like to learn and discuss about Japanese culture and society? The Japan Society Film Club is an online space to chat about films and Japan in an informal atmosphere. It take place on the first Wednesday of the month. We recommend a film to watch in advance and meet online to discuss. Films are often available online for free, to rent or with subscription, on DVD/Blu Ray or on BFI player. The event is open to all and we encourage participants to freely express their opinions and feelings about the films.
