For the first in an exciting new series of careers events planned in collaboration with the Japan Club of London Business School, we invite guests to join us for an in-person panel discussion, followed by an audience Q&A and networking session/drinks reception.

Informed by the personal experiences and career trajectories of a trio of expert speakers – Anna Dingley, Jon Fisher and Graham Holman – this event will offer participants an in-depth, knowledgeable overview of how to land a Japan-related job. Our panel will share how their own careers started - their journey into their current positions and how this developed in tandem with their involvement/interest with Japan. This session will provide a particular focus on careers in the City of London, in addition to how to transition into these kinds of roles from time spent on the JET programme.

The event is open to all, but is particularly aimed at university students/new graduates as well as young professionals, and aims to help individuals looking to further their careers approach the job market with both confidence and knowledge in the wealth of opportunities available to them.

Anna Dingley
Since studying Japanese and business at university in the 90s, Anna has spent her entire career working in jobs related to Japan. She has worked in technology, finance and government sectors, and now runs her own consulting firm, Japan Connect Ltd. Previous employers include Bloomberg, JPMorgan, the London Stock Exchange, NTT Docomo, UK Trade and Investment, and a US-based artificial intelligence firm SparkCognition. Anna is the only foreign Non-executive at Nihon M&A Center Holdings Inc. (listed in Tokyo), and is also Non-executive Director of JPMorgan Japanese Investment Trust PLC (listed in London). She was previously a trustee of the Japan Society and remains a strong supporter of UK-Japan relations.

Jon Fisher
Following four years in Wakayama prefecture on the JET Programme and then teaching English independently, Jon returned to the UK in 1999 to start a career in accountancy. He qualified with Ernst & Young then joined Nomura Asset Management in London, whilst also volunteering with the JET Alumni Association, before returning to rural Japan as a freelance translator for several years. In 2008 he made the move back to join Greenback Alan LLP, a niche audit, accounting and tax firm serving the UK-Japanese business community. He spends his days helping to enable the firm’s diverse and heavily Japan-oriented team to assist a wide variety of clients, from multi-national Tokyo-listed household names to regional family businesses making their first foray overseas, acquiring or launching, and then operating, their UK interests.

Graham Holman
Qualified as a solicitor in 1991 and in the same year moved to Osaka to work in the Yamagami Law Office. In 1993, he was also seconded to the Legal Department of Nissho Iwai Corporation. Returning to the UK in 1998, Graham joined Sumitomo Corporation Europe Ltd. (‘SCEU’), initially in the Legal Department and is now a director of the company and head of the Corporate Coordination and Planning Group, which covers the corporate planning, business intelligence and IT functions. He is also a director of Sumitomo Corporation’s regional companies in Spain and Belgium and a number of SCEU’s subsidiaries. He recently attended COP26 in Glasgow as part of the Keidanren delegation.

His voluntary roles include acting as a trustee of the Japan Society, Chatham House (The Royal Institute of International Affairs) and SGI-UK, leading the Brexit Task Force for the UK for the Japan Business Council in Europe, and as a committee member of the British-Japanese Lawyers’ Association from its outset.
