The kimono is an iconic symbol of Japanese culture; a traditional garment worn by both men and women for special occasions and celebrations including festivals like Shichi-Go-San (7-5-3) as well as graduation ceremonies and even weddings.

Pupils learn about about kimono and accessories through our short video and accompanying presentation. Pupils then design their own kimono pattern by incorporating a cultural symbol or motif that is representative of one of the four seasons. The main lesson content is recommended for KS2+, educators can use the Design a Kimono worksheet as a standalone activity for KS1 and EYFS.
