Japanese Tales of Lafcadio Hearn is a collection of 28 stories inspired by Japanese folk tales. The stories span a wide range of genres, from fantastical ghost stories to love stories with a twist. This includes the story of a young samurai who incurs the wrath of his lord when he marries without permission but is surprised to find his wife is the spirit of a willow tree!

Patrick Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904), later known as Koizumi Yakumo, is well known for his collections of Japanese legends and ghost stories. Hearn travelled widely in his life: he was born in Greece, grew up in Ireland, moved to the US, then to the French West Indies, before finally settling in Japan where he married a Japanese woman and changed his name. He collected Japanese tales, wrote about Japan and created his own tales for both Japanese and Western audiences.
