Do you love Japanese film classics, anime or contemporary cinema stories? Do you miss Japan and want to see it at least on screen? Would you like to learn and discuss about Japanese culture and society? Join us for the new Japan Society Film Club where we will chat online about films and Japan in an informal atmosphere.

Join us on 7 December for the final Film Club of the year to discuss the surprising 2017 hit One Cut of the Dead directed by Shinichiro Ueda.

One Cut of the Dead (カメラを止めるな!, 2017) is no ordinary zombie film. Whilst shooting a low-budget zombie film in an abandoned warehouse, the crew find themselves caught between actual zombies and a mad director who won’t stop filming. Starting off with a non-stop one-take 37 minute shot, the film then completely switches direction and turns the zombie genre completely upside down into a charming, audience-friendly comedy. Filmmaker Shinichiro Ueda and his cast of non-professionals created something fresh and entertaining which became a massive hit not just in Japan, but around the world winning awards at over 30 international film festivals.

Director Shinichiro Ueda (1984, Japan) formed his film company Panpokopina in 2010, and to date his short films have received numerous festival awards. In 2015, he made his commercial film debut with a short film, Neko manma, in an omnibus film project. "Making films which will still be fun after 100 years" is his personal slogan, and he continues to create films with high entertainment value. His feature debut One Cut of the Dead (2017), a micro-budget zombie comedy, had a sensational box office return of more than 1,000 times its budget.

Japan Society Film Clubs take place on the first Wednesday of the month. We recommend a film to watch in advance and meet online to discuss. Films are often available online for free, to rent or with subscription, as well as on DVD/Blu Ray. When possible, we also invite film experts to introduce and lead the discussion, but the event is open to all and we encourage participants to freely express their opinions and feelings about the films.

If you have any questions, please call the Japan Society office on 020 3075 1996 or email events@japansociety.org.uk.
