Would you like to learn and discuss about Japanese culture and society? The Japan Society Film Club is an online space to chat about films and Japan in an informal atmosphere.

Join our Film Club in October to discuss the thought-provoking classic Woman of the Dunes directed by Hiroshi Teshigahara in 1964.

Woman of the Dunes (砂の女, Suna no onna, 1964), is a captivating film adapted from the homonymous novel by Kobo Abe. Eiji Okada stars as Niki, an entomologist stranded in a remote desert village. His failed attempt to leave forces him to stay with a widow (Kyoko Kishida) in a sandpit home, tasked with shoveling sand to safeguard the home from encroaching dunes. Over time, Niki's escape efforts are thwarted, leading to a profound exploration of isolation, existentialism, and human nature. With a striking high-contrast black-and-white cinematography and haunting score by composer by Toru Takemitsu, Woman of the Dunes seamlessly blends highly sensual drama with an intensely gripping thriller making it a timeless classic in Japanese cinema.

Japan Society Film Clubs take place on the first Wednesday of the month. We recommend a film to watch in advance and meet online to discuss. Films are often available online for free, to rent or with subscription, on DVD/Blu Ray or on BFI player. The event is open to all and we encourage participants to freely express their opinions and feelings about the films.

If you have any questions, please call the Japan Society office on 020 3075 1996 or email events@japansociety.org.uk.
