As we continue to spend most of our time at home, many of us seek different ways to keep our spirits lifted. This workshop focusses on the healing aspects of creativity and being mindful of your surroundings.

In this workshop, Manga artist Fumio Obata will introduce examples of anthropomorphism in visual culture and manga in Japan, and discuss how plants in particular can successfully be given human characteristics. Workshop participants will consider their relationship to nature, as they learn how to create their own characters and devise a short manga story. The workshop is suitable for complete beginners.

Session 1 - Building characters: Create characters designed around a house plant or flowers
Session 2 - Develop a story: Develop a story featuring your own character, based around your plants or flowers

  • Any plant or flower you have at home
  • Paper (preferably white) – i.e. photocopy paper, sketch pad
  • Pencils (either HB, B, or 2B) for rough sketches
  • A rubber
  • Colour pencils

    Fumio Obata manga

Optional

  • iPad or tablet device with drawing function using a pen tool, if you prefer to draw digitally
  • Printer - Please print out copies of the storyboard template in advance. Alternatively, draw them by hand. You might also like to print handouts in advance.

Please note: You will need a good set up with your computer/web cam so that you can show your work over zoom, as the artist will give one-on-one instruction.

Fumio Obata is a comic book author, whose work and inspiration come from cultural differences and social issues in his surroundings. He is also a visual artist in his own right.

Obata was born in Tokyo and grew up with the Manga and Anime cultures of the 1970s and 80s. Always fond of drawing, at school his exercise books were always full of cartoon sketches. He has been living and working in the UK since 1991.

He studied BA Illustration at Glasgow School of Art and obtained a Masters degree in Communication Design from Royal College of Art in London. Under the guidance of some great tutors he decided to pursue his career in sequential imagery/design and is eager to extend its potentials into a wider perspective.

His most recent work, The Garden, is a story about healing through mindfulness and gardening created in collaboration with writer Sean Michael Wilson.
