The Japan Society is delighted to invite members to a guided tour of Japanese Women Photographers: From 1950s to Now, a landmark exhibition at The Photographers’ Gallery reframing the history of Japanese photography through the voices and lenses of women artists.
Bringing together the work of 27 groundbreaking photographers from the 1950s to the present day, the exhibition explores how women have shaped the way Japan sees itself, and how it is seen by the world.
Spanning identity, pop culture, fashion, everyday life and social change, Japanese Women Photographers celebrates both internationally renowned artists and those whose contributions have long been overlooked. The result is a powerful rebalancing of a history too often told through a single, male-dominated lens.
From pioneering figures of the post-war era to today’s most experimental voices, the exhibition presents more than 200 photographs, videos, installations and rare photobooks. Together, these works offer a vivid, intimate and expansive portrait of Japan, revealing how women artists have challenged conventions, captured social transformation and redefined photography across generations.
The evening will begin with a curator-led tour by exhibition curator Taous Dahmani, followed by an opportunity to ask questions and explore the galleries at your own pace until the gallery closes at 8pm.
This guided tour is an excellent opportunity to discover the remarkable work of Japanese women photographers and the lasting impact they have had on the history of Japanese photography.
Dr Taous Dahmani is Curator at The Photographers' Gallery, and an art historian specialising in photography. She has curated both group and solo exhibitions internationally and has been widely published in photobooks and journals.
