At the End of the Matinee tells the story of Satoshi Makino, a classical guitarist who has traveled the world and whose career is at its peak, and Yoko Komine, an intelligent and refined journalist. After meeting for the first time, they form a long lasting and intense connection, broken by long periods of silence. While both Satoshi and Yoko are drawn to each other, neither has enough confidence to make the first move, begging the question: Will their connection endure? More than just a simple love story “the novel is also a study in how our own perceptions of the past frequently change and therefore alter our futures” – The Japan Times. Translated by Juliet Winters Carpenter.

Keiichiro Hirano was born in Gamagori, Aichi prefecture, Japan. He published his first novel (Nisshoku) in 1998 and won the Akutagawa Prize the next year as one of the youngest winners ever (at 23 years of age). He graduated from the Law Department of Kyoto University in 1999. In 2005 he was nominated as a cultural ambassador and spent a year in France.
