The Japan Society is pleased to welcome Sixth Form students back to an in-person Japan Taster event in March.  

This event offers students the chance to experience hands on workshops with experts and listen to live speakers in-person during a morning or afternoon session.  It is aimed at students who are studying Japanese, but will also be of interest to those who have not had the opportunity to do so formally at school, but are considering taking Japanese studies (or Japanese alongside other subjects) at university. 

Keynote Speech by Ailin Conant

The keynote speech will be delivered by Japanese–American director Ailin Conant. She will be speaking about her latest work Amaterasu – Out of the Cave, a contemporary folktale inspired by the Shinto myth of the Japanese Sun Goddess and the God of Sea and Disease.

Cultural Workshops 

Students will have the choice of participating in two out of three practical workshops during the session to learn about kokeshi, hanko making, and the soroban. 

• Design a Kokeshi with Aya Burbanks 
  In this workshop, Aya will walk you through a brief history of kokeshi and show you a selection some of her original handmade designs, some inspired by popular anime characters, before teaching you how to decorate a kokeshi with your very own designs!

• Make your Personal Hanko with Nao Fukumoto  
  In this workshop, Nao will walk you through a brief history of seals in Japan and show you examples of different types of seals before teaching you how to carve your own simple personal hanko to take home!

• Soroban and Flash Anzan with Tomoko Hoult and Eriko Miyamoto
  In this workshop, soroban teacher Tomoko Hoult and former all-Japan soroban champion Eriko Miyamoto will teach you how to use the soroban and demonstrate how Flash Anzan can beat a calculator!

Important notes: 

• To confirm your booking, you must read and accept our terms and conditions. Please check the box on the booking form to acknowledge you have read and accept these. 
• Places will be issued on a first-come-first served basis. Students may attend on their own or be accompanied by a member of staff. 
• During the session students will have the opportunity to join 2 out of 3 possible workshops. Please use the booking form to specify your preferred workshop. We will try, where possible, to give students their chosen workshops, but please note that this may not be possible in all cases.  
• This event will be held at the Daiwa Foundation Japan House which has no parking spaces available and alternatives will need to be found. We apologise for any inconvenience. 
• Food will not be provided at the event, so we advise teachers and students to eat before or after attending. 
• Bookings for this course are conditional on completion of the course. Failure to attend without cancelling with at least 72 hours of notice will be subject to a fee of £5 per student, which will be invoiced to your school.

Directions:

The Daiwa Foundation Japan House is located at 13/14 Cornwall Terrace (Outer Circle) London NW1 4QP. The closest Underground station is Baker Street station, served by the Bakerloo Line, Circle and Hammersmith & City Line, Jubilee Line, and the Metropolitan Line. We advise everyone to check the service on the Underground that morning before taking the train to avoid possible delays. Please ensure to make your way to the main entrance on Outer Circle which is directly across from Regent's Park. Attendees will not be able to enter from the back door Cornwall Terrace Mews.
