In Tokyo, twenty-seven-year-old Cho Norie, originally from Taiwan, conceals her unconventional life amid corporate routines. While colleagues fret over the economy, marriage, and family, she guards her sexuality and a past violent upheaval. Hidden beneath is an intense preoccupation with death. Solo Dance unfolds the impactful narrative of a gay individual navigating Taiwan's challenges and corporate Japan's rigidity. This remarkable debut traces a profound journey of coming-of-age, encapsulating the struggle for hope amid trauma, painting an intimate and compelling portrayal of resilience and discovery amidst life's complexities.

Li Kotomi is a bilingual Japanese-Chinese writer, translator, and interpreter. She was born in Taiwan in 1989 and moved to Japan in 2013. She received the Gunzō New Writer’s Award for Excellence in 2017 for her first Japanese novel Hitorimai (Solo Dance). Her Chinese translation of the book was also published in Taiwan. In 2019 her novel Itsutsu kazoereba mikazuki ga (Count to Five and the Crescent Moon...) was nominated for the Akutagawa Prize. In 2021 she won the Akutagawa Prize for Higanbana ga saku shima (The Island Where the Spider Lily Blooms) and the Minister of Education’s Art Encouragement Prize for New Artists for Porarisu ga furisosogu yoru (Night of the Shining North Star).
