In her mid-fifties, Mitsuki Katsura, a Japanese French-language instructor, faces a harrowing reality in Tokyo. Her husband's affair and caring for her demanding, ailing mother challenge her deeply. Dreaming guiltily of her mother's eventual passing, Mitsuki's overwhelming care duties clash with her quest for personal fulfillment. Inheritance from Mother delves into these complex layers, uncovering the paradoxes of Japanese culture. It's a profound exploration of familial dynamics, marriage, aging, and the resilience ingrained in women—a poignant narrative navigating the intricate ties between mothers and daughters amidst the weight of societal expectations and personal aspirations.
Minae Mizumura is a Japanese writer born in Tokyo in 1951. At age twelve, she moved to the United States, where she studied Studio Art in Boston and French at Yale. Known for her experimentation with language and skillful storytelling, she has been awarded the MEXT Award for New Artists in 1991, and the Noma Literary New Face Prize in 1995.
