The Japan Society is delighted to host five sashiko workshops in partnership with Studio Masachuka and Uniqlo UK.
Sashiko (刺し子)is a traditional Japanese stitching technique for mending clothes, developed by working-class people such as farmers and fishermen during the Edo period. It’s a form of upcycling, making garments stronger and lasting longer.
These workshops are an introductory course to learn the basic skills of decorative sashiko stitching. No prior experience of sashiko is necessary but you need to have basic skills in sewing for this workshop.
Founder of Studio Masachuka, Masahiko Morikawa started his career in 2006 with a small fashion project selling customised jeans whilst studying in Canada. In order to gain sewing skills he started working at sewing factory Benerozo in Kumamoto where he trained for 4 years before moving to the UK in 2011. After working as studio manager for a factory in South London and helping to run a fashion brand, he set up Studio Masachuka Limited in 2012. Studio Masachuka has been collaborating with Uniqlo Europe, USA and Japan since 2022 on their sustainability project to help make fashion more ethical and sustainable.
