The Japan Society are delighted to invite members and friends to a special gallery tour of Yoshida: Three Generations of Japanese Printmaking at the Dulwich Picture Gallery.

Featuring over 75 exquisite prints, Yoshida: Three Generations of Japanese Printmaking traces the evolution of Japanese printmaking across two centuries through the works of the Yoshida dynasty of artists -  from the rich, nostalgic landscapes of the prolific artist and patriarch of the family, Hiroshi to the abstract work of the family’s later and current generations. The works show the unique talents, diverse printing techniques and innovations that each member brought to printmaking.

For this special tour for The Japan Society, we are privileged to welcome curator Dr. Monika Hinkel, who will guide us through the exhibition. This is a great opportunity to gain insights into the commonalities and differences in the themes, styles, and techniques displayed by each member of the Yoshida family in their work.

Dr Monika Hinkel is a Lecturer and curator of Japanese Art, Convenor of the Arts of Japan and Korea module SOAS-Alphawood Postgraduate Diploma in Asian Art. She received her PhD from Bonn University and has written widely on aspects of Japanese art. Monika has worked as a Curator for Japanese art at the Museum of East Asian Art, Cologne and lived in Japan for many years. Her special research interest is Japanese Woodblock Prints.

Dulwich Picture Gallery, founded in 1811, is the world’s first purpose-built public art gallery. It cares for and displays an outstanding collection of Old Master paintings within Sir John Soane’s pioneering architecture. As an independent gallery, which receives no regular public funding, it pursues its founders’ purpose of presenting art ‘for the inspection of the public’ while engaging as many people as possible, of all ages and backgrounds, through a creative programme. Entering the gallery space visitors discover a surprising and contemplative experience that encourages the discovery of personal connections with historic works of art – a place to Find Yourself in Art.
