At a time when we have all had to put our travel plans on hold, and when our daily interactions are necessarily limited, this online meeting with multi award-winning fashion and portrait photographer, Frederic Aranda, introduces us to some of the people he has got to know on visits to Japan.

During his time studying Japanese at Oxford University, Frederic developed a passion for photography and later ran the University photographic society. On graduation, he embarked on a career as a photographer. Since then, he has made portraits of some of the most recognised faces of our age. While much of his work consists of solo portraits, Frederic has gained a reputation for his striking group compositions. He is a regular contributor to Vogue, Vanity Fair, GQ and Harper’s Bazaar, and has worked commercially for prestigious clients such as Cartier, Louis Vuitton, Zegna and Chatila, among others.

Long-time Japan Society members may remember his 2012 exhibition Kabuki, to raise funds one year after the Tohoku earthquake and Fukushima nuclear disaster, which featured photographs taken when he was granted rare backstage access. In 2019, Frederic again had the opportunity to spend time with those working in the kabuki and bunraku theatres.

Do join us for this special event, in which Frederic Aranda will share his love for Japan and its culture, through conversation and his work.
