Join us this December for a lively discussion of Fish Story (Yoshihiro Nakamura, 2009), a quirky and contemporary comedy that shows how a forgotten punk song might just save the world.

Fish Story (フィッシュストーリー, Fisshu Sutōrī, 2009) is a wildly inventive Japanese comedy that blends music, science fiction, and absurdist storytelling into a genre-defying cult classic. Based on a novel by Kotaro Isaka, the film follows a punk rock song recorded in 1975 by a little-known band that mysteriously becomes the key to saving the world from a comet decades later. Told through a series of interconnected stories spanning four decades, Fish Story is both hilarious and heartfelt, weaving together awkward heroes, hijacked ferries, doomsday cults, and record shop philosophers. With its quirky tone and clever structure, the film celebrates the ripple effect of small actions and the unexpected power of art in contemporary life.

Yoshihiro Nakamura (1970-) is a Japanese film director and screenwriter known for his inventive storytelling and genre-blending style. He began making short films and later worked as an assistant director under filmmakers such as Yoichi Sai and Juzo Itami. Nakamura gained international recognition with Fish Story (2009), which premiered at the New York Asian Film Festival. His other acclaimed works include Golden Slumber (2010) and A Boy and His Samurai (2010), both of which showcase his talent for mixing humour, heart, and unexpected narrative twists.

Do you love Japanese film classics, anime or contemporary cinema stories? Do you miss Japan and want to see it at least on screen? Would you like to learn and discuss about Japanese culture and society? The Japan Society Film Club is an online space to chat about films and Japan in an informal atmosphere. It take place on the first Wednesday of the month. We recommend a film to watch in advance and meet online to discuss. Films are often available online for free, to rent or with subscription, on DVD/Blu Ray or on BFI player. The event is open to all and we encourage participants to freely express their opinions and feelings about the films.
