The Japan Youth Collective 2023-2024
The Japan Youth Collective is a new initiative for 16-19 year olds interested in Japan. Members of the Collective are working with the Japan Society over 8 months to discover more about Japan, meet new people, learn new skills and work on a final event to inspire others.
Our 16 participants come from all across Greater London and are interested in many different aspects of Japan. The 2023-2024 programme kicked off with a two-day orientation at Japan House London at the end of August and the Collective continue to meet fortnightly, coming together to explore Japanese culture.
Their final outcome was a participant-led event for friends and family in April 2024. Take a look at Discover Japan Day!
The 2023/2024 programme was support by the Japan House London Trust and the Great British Sasakawa Foundation.
Members feedback
“ The Collective has been an inclusive, accepting and eye-opening experience. It has shaped me into a confident young woman and allowed me to learn to use my voice and share my beliefs. In the future, I hope to study political science at university or abroad. The growth and connections I made during my time as a JYC member will be invaluable as I move into adulthood.”
“Meeting the Emperor was a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience. Although I was nervous to speak to His Majesty, it was incredibly meaningful to take part in this cultural exchange between the UK and Japan. I also had the opportunity to connect with inspiring professionals working between the two countries, which broadened my perspective on future career possibilities. - Japan Youth Collective Member”
“During the programme, I experienced various aspects of Japanese culture while simultaneously developing skills such as leadership and teamwork. I was able to go out of my comfort zone to help organise our final event as the leader of the Design Team. I feel so privileged to have been a part of it, working on the design and planning with the different teams – something I wouldn’t have the chance to do outside of the Collective.”
