The Board values the opportunity to engage with members at the AGM, which is a key event for the Society and its members. We are delighted to be able to hold this year's AGM in person once again.

At the End of the Matinee tells the story of Satoshi Makino, a classical guitarist who has traveled the world and whose career is at its peak, and Yoko Komine, an intelligent and refined journalist. After meeting for the first time, they form a long-lasting and intense connection.

As tensions increase around the island of Taiwan, Japan Society chair Bill Emmott is joined by two experts who have long watched the ebb and flow of politics and diplomatic relations in the region: Yasuhiro Matsuda, professor at the University of Tokyo’s  Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia and Meia Nouwens, Senior Fellow for Chinese Defence Policy and Military Modernisation at the International Institute for Strategic Studies.

In this lecture, Alex Hardie will explore the life of Lord Sempill (1893-1965), a distinguished aviator and a lifelong friend of Japan who was labelled “the traitor of Pearl Harbor.” He will argue that the archival evidence does not support the prevailing view of Sempill as a spy who betrayed British and American interests.
