The club is open to anyone who would like to improve their skills at speaking in Japanese or English and to learn techniques and tricks to expand their communication and presentation abilities.

The current British Ambassador to Japan, Paul Madden, will complete his tour of duty at the end of February 2021. In his annual update for the Japan Society, Mr Madden will look back over his four years in Japan, as well as reflecting on the past eventful year in particular.

In this workshop, participants will make a katazome-printed silk square suitable for a head or neck scarf. The workshop is suitable for any level of design or textile printing experience.

15/03/2021ARCHIVED How did Elizabeth Anderson learn Japanese in 1943? Wartime language courses & the race against time


This lecture will start with the story of Elizabeth Anderson (1906-1993), who worked at Bletchley Park from 1939, learnt Japanese at the Bedford Japanese School and then was sent to Mauritius as a translator and teacher.

We are delighted to be partnering with The Japan Sake and Shochu Makers Association on two special tutored tastings. This is an ideal opportunity for all members who would like to know a bit more about sake production, different styles of sake, and how to enjoy it on different occasions, especially at home.

We are delighted to welcome Tomoko Hoult to give a special talk introducing the Soroban (Japanese abacus) and explaining how it can be used as a classroom tool to help children visualise numbers and understand the decimal system.

Ten years after the terrible tragedy of the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, what has changed in Fukushima and what remains to be done? To consider these questions, Japan Society chairman Bill Emmott will be joined by Yoichi Funabashi and Sir David Warren, former chair of the Japan Society.
